MEET ESPORTS GAMER “DZ PAUL”

ButterB: You’re definitely an accomplished player, so can you tell me how you got started in Rainbow Six and video games in general? Can you also explain Rainbow Six for those that don’t already know?

Paul: In general, I played video games ever since I can remember. My dad got me in to playing XBox when I was really young, and ever since I’ve just loved it. As far a Rainbow Six, I came across it super early and I realized I was super good at it compared to all the other games I played. I just stuck with it. Basically, the game is a tactical first person shooter game. It basically revolves around strategy and methodical play than a normal shooter video game. It’s basically a 5v5 and there’s seven rounds. It’s three minutes per round and you have one life per round.

ButterB: How often do you travel for gaming?

Paul: There are four regions: North America, Europe, South America, and APAC (Asia-Pacific). If you place top two in your region you get to a major which is held in a different country decided by the developers. I just recently went to one in Montreal, and then I went to one in Japan. It’s amazing being able to visit these places and play around the world. My favorite place was definitely Japan. It is the cleanest place I’ve ever seen, like there was no pollution.

ButterB: Who do you look up to the most in the gaming world and in life in general?

Paul: The person I look up to the most is my coach. He was my ex teammate and he holds me to a high standard. Outside of the gaming world I would say Michael Jordan. I may be a little bit biased because I just finished watching the documentary he put out, but his outlook on sports and life in general is inspiring. He’s something else. The ultimate competitor.

ButterB: Do you feel like you are in a unique position as an esports gamer?

Paul: I’m super grateful to be in the position that I am. It’s a very limited position there’s only fifty people in the North American region that have the same position that I do.

ButterB: What is your favorite thing about the gaming experience?

Paul: Taking up gaming has helped me improve more as a person. It’s been a great experience learning what it means to be a great teammate, and getting to know the people beside me each day. It benefits my personal connections.

ButterB: What advice would you give to people who want to get started playing video games for money?

Paul: To follow your dreams, but if you feel like you have even one ounce of doubt then I wouldn’t put in as many hours as it takes to get here. It’s a lot of hours, and a lot of people think I just get to play video games and it is not that big of a deal but the esports industry is growing every year. It’s a lot of work.

ButterB: How many hours do you put in every week and how many do you recommend for people who want to get serious about their gaming?

Paul: I work from 12 to 7 every day except Saturday, but I recommend at least 6 to 7 hours a day. It really just depends. You can also still improve just by watching a game and studying it.

ButterB: How do you react when you lose?

Losing is amazing

Paul: It’s a great opportunity to learn from it. Losing is amazing. You learn more from a loss than you do from a win. No one likes losing, but you just have to view it positively.

ButterB: When did you start taking gaming more seriously and to a competitive level?

Paul: I’ve always been competitive. I mean I played sports like Soccer up until high school, so I think it was after my first match when my team won. It was such an amazing feeling that I loved and craved and wanted to experience every game.

ButterB: If you had to become an animal which one would you be?

Paul: This might be a common answer but I would pick the lion. They’re wild and dominant, and no one really f**** with you.

ButterB: Is there trash talk involved with teams at your level?

Paul: There’s definitely some trash talk that goes around. It doesn’t really affect me but it affects others so that’s why I do it to a certain extent. I feel like it can get in people’s heads and affect how they play. I never say anything too bad and no one takes it personal because at the end of the day people know trash talk is just trash talk.

ButterB: Whats your fashion sense like?

Paul: I’m a little hype-beast, i have some Louis Vuitton stuff. i love Adidas, their quality on their gear is amazing. I am actually wearing an Adidas sweatsuit right haha.

ButterB: That’s interesting! Ok so now it’s time for our last question called the butter question. This question is typically out of the ordinary and sometimes controversial, but we want the full, honest answer! So the butter question is: “If you had to pick one person to babysit your child out of El Chapo or Kim Jong Un who would it be?

Paul: That’s a hard choice haha. would have to pick El Chapo because if I leave my kid with Kim Jong Un I don’t know if I’d ever see him again.

ButterB: Thanks for the interview! We enjoyed having you, and keep it butter!

Paul: Thanks, keep it butter.

College Basketball Player Dee Montgomery Talks His Decision to stay at U Indy, Being A Sneakerhead, And More

ButterB: Hello, welcome to 2KIB. How has you’re summer been? (with the pandemic going on) What areas of your game have you been focusing on to improve on?

Dee: It’s been good! I’ve been able to get in the gym. I workout Monday through Friday. Sometimes I even do 2 a days. I’m Just getting my confidence back. My knowledge of the game has gotten better. Decision, play making, and also I’ve been sharpening my jump shot.

ButterB: Earlier this year, you put your name in the transfer portal but ultimately decided to stay at U Indy. What went into your decision to stay?

Dee: The love from my team and the fans messaging me on why I should stay! I also felt like it would put me in the best position in the long run. Also, I know we can do big things as a team next year. Our goal is to win the GLVC Championship, and make a run in the NCAA tournament. With the team we have I know we’ll make those things happen.

ButterB: For sure, did the hiring of Paul Casaro as the new head coach play a part in it as well?

Dee: Yeah it was part of the reason being that he was a former coach of mine, and how hard he recruited me throughout the process!

ButterB: Who are some others players on your team that we should look for this year?

Dee: Cory Miller, Jesse Bingham, Kendrick Tchoua. All league guys! And we have some incoming transfers that will make some noise

ButterB: So you’re known for your swag, and particularly all the shoes you have. Are you a sneaker head or a Hypebeast?

Dee: SneakHead! My love for shoes started in high school. I have over 100 pairs. My love came from knowing the history behind shoes and seeing all the older dudes from around my way kicks. My favorite pair of shoes are Jordan 4’s. When I finish playing basketball I plan to open a sneaker store!

ButterB: Awesome! So how do you feel about all the things going on in America and the BLM movement, and how to you personally react to it?

Dee: Personally, I feel good that people are finally standing up for what’s right. These things have been going on way too long. I fully support the BLM movement. The coaching staff spoke to us about the matter and I personally went out to a protest with my former teammate, Jordache Mavunga, and close friend, Delvin Lobbins

ButterB: Awesome, so the last question and the keepitbutter question is “why do you some females say they want to date nice guys, but then never give them chances?”

Dee: They spend too much time chasing after dudes that don’t want them. Meanwhile they missing they blessing! They need to start answering their DM’s from nice guys hahah.

ButterB: Haha! thanks for the interview Dee, best of luck this year, and as always Keep it Butter!!

Dee: For sure, Butter!

TOP 10 SHOWS ON NETFLIX

With the quarantine going on and the abundance of people stuck at home watching TV, I decided to make a list of the best Netflix shows to watch and binge on. Some of these shows are popular and others are diamonds in the ruff. The only qualifications I had for the shows are that they are currently on Netflix, and have more than 1 season. I learned at a very young age, you can’t judge a show off of 1 season (13 reasons why???)

1. Ozark

This show will go down as one of the greatest shows in Netflix history. From the first episode to the last it’s compelling, suspenseful, nail-biting and entertaining. The story line is about a dysfunctional suburban family who launders money for a drug cartel, and has to move to a small country town (Ozark) to do it. Well known actor Jason Bateman (Marty Byrde) delivers an Emmy deserving performance, but the one who surprisingly stole the show was Ruth Langmore, who was played by Julia Garner. Ozark is extremely well-written and each season has different complex themes. It gives me feels of Shameless (#2) mixed with Narcos (Not ranked). Hats off to Jason Bateman who also directs the series.

2. Shameless

Just like Ozark… Shameless is also a show about a dysfunctional family, but this family does not commit high scale crimes… they commit petty crime and master side hustles. Shameless is hilarious, deep and everything you would want in a TV show. It centers around a white family who lives in a white neighborhood in the south-side of Chicago. I think the beauty of shameless is that it gives its viewers a whole different perspective and story about the south-side. Not one where the biggest problem is gang violence, but one where the biggest problems are poverty and drug use/addiction. Each character does a great job portraying their story in a funny and elegant way. One constant theme in the show is the moral standards and social norms that come with being a “Gallagher” (Drinking, Drugs, coming up with side hustles) and being from the “South-Side” (Never snitch, look after each other). This show is truly great and would be my vote for being number one if it wasn’t for the fact that it starts off kind of slow. It does pick up fast though… This show will make you laugh, cry, and laugh so hard you end up crying.

3. Breaking Bad

This one goes without needing an explanation. If you haven’t heard of this show or know how great it is, you have probably been living with Patrick under a rock. This will not only go down as one of the greatest Netflix shows of all time, but according to many “experts” it will go down as one of the greatest TV shows in the history of television.

4. All American

All american is a relatively new show on Netflix loosely based on the life of an American professional football player, Spencer Paysinger. The show takes you through the challenges that the main character, Spencer, faces day-to-day as a high school student aiming for the NFL. He experiences a huge change when he moves form Crenshaw to Beverly Hills. It is a super entertaining and inspiring show, and it explores some real-life issues. This show is a “tug at your heart-strings” type of drama. It kind of reminds me of “Friday Night Lights” ( The TV show) but the Black version. Highly recommended!

5. That 70’s Show

If you can’t tell by the name, That 70’s Show is the oldest show on the list. The first season premiered in 1998 and the last season was in 2006. It is the definition of an “OG” comedy show. The show portrays what life was like in the 70’s, from fashion, the lingo, and of course indulging in cannabis. It follows a friend group of young adults, who spend most of their time hanging out in the basement. The most iconic scenes in this show happen when the crew is participating in a smoke circle and engage in hilarious takes. What makes this show good is the feel of an authentic friend group, and watching them go through highs (no pun intended) and lows, and how all the characters develop throughout the seasons.

6. Master of None

I Love this show! It follows Dev, (Aziz Ansari) a young actor in new York city, who throughout the seasons is trying to find himself. It does a great job at being a comedy, but also touching on some important topics and issues. It shows and brings awareness to many of the stereotypes and judgments that people have about Indian-Americans. Other than that, I think the main theme of this show is relationships. It seems like each episode focuses on Dev’s relationships, whether it’s with his family, friends or romantic relationships. This show has a “real-life” feel to it.

7. Weeds

Dysfunctional family, committing crime, sound familiar?? This show is a worse version of Ozark, and still on the top of the list. (That is a testament to how good Ozark is). Weeds walked, so Ozark can run! This show is about a suburban mother who decides to become a drug dealer. A lot of suspense and dark humor, filled with twists and turns. The only bad thing about this show is that it does start to become repetitive in the later seasons.

8. Love

Love is a romantic comedy series about two people in their late 20’s meeting and, you guessed it, falling in love. This show has a very real feel to it, it portrays how being in a relationship is actually like and not some made-up “Hollywood” crap that most TV shows seem to portray. The chemistry between the two main characters, Gus and  Mickey, is immaculate. You can tell that the director tried a different approach to this show to make it unique. There are many scenes with awkward silence and even the cadence is not typical. While it’s not necessarily a comedy, it does have many funny moments. (Not rolling on the floor laughing scenes but scenes that make you chuckle).

9. The End of the F***ing World

The End of the F***ING World is unlike any show I have ever watched. I watched each season of this show in less than 2 days. It is soo suspenseful and is filled with tons of cliff hangers and jaw dropping scenes. I am not even going to attempt to explain the plot because it is so complex, but I will definitely recommend watching it. It is a quick watch.

10. American Vandal

One of the most underrated shows in Netflix history! It is a parody of crime docuseries (which are popular right now) and they do a good job at poking fun at them while also being suspenseful. This show is laugh out loud funny and can get too goofy at times, but if you can get past that it gets deep and thought provoking. If this list was based on season finales, American Vandal would be number 1. The last episode of each season is amazing and leaves you in awe. Without giving too much away, the last episode of each season makes you think and raises awareness to complex issues especially within the young generation.
